While practicality and comfort is one of, if not the most important features in our home, we do need to pay attention to style as well. Whether you come from a busy household or live on your own, we all want our home to be exactly as we want it. Regardless if you’re doing up your entire home or just one room, flooring is the perfect place to start. It’s usually the first thing you notice when you walk into a room, expensive and disruptive to change, and can make or break a room. We’ve come up with the most common interior themes and which flooring complements each one the best.

Rustic

If you’re into your interior design, then you’ll know that a rustic interior is all the rage right now. With many of us lusting after something from a bygone era and a little closer to nature, a rustic style flooring is a great place to start. This style is all about not holding back, so with this in mind we’d recommend a gorgeous distressed wood flooring with the knots and grains giving plenty of natural character. In terms of colour, you have plenty of scope – a rich chocolate walnut brown will add luxury to your home, while a lighter sandy tone will show off the wood’s natural imperfections beautifully. If you’re feeling extra daring, then a whitewashed wood will really set off that shabby chic appearance.

Modern

It goes without saying that a modern interior is at the height of fashion at the moment. Typically, it presents us with slick, clean-cut finishes and minimalistic décor. When it comes to flooring, something that is a little cleaner and fresher is the way to go. We’re not saying that everything needs to be completely plain, but perhaps a wood flooring with calmed knots and grains would work perfectly. In terms of colour, again most work well but if you really want to go to town then grey is looking really hot at the moment – creating a sophisticated and stylish back drop. In terms of other features, materials such as glass and steel show off the modern appeal.

Traditional

With all the complications of the modern world, sometimes we just need to take a step back in time. If you enjoy a traditional interior, then you’re probably be used to a plush and grand space. It boasts deep rich colours, lots of textures and plenty of accessories. This doesn’t mean you have to live in an interior that’s falling apart and bagging for an upgrade, ironically updating your flooring can enhance the old-style look.

As a starting point, we’d recommend going for a rich dark wood, notably a walnut brown with a lacquered finish. However, don’t think the darker the better – if you do go for this floor, then match it up with lighter walls or furniture to create that beautiful contrast.
