It’s a marmite season; some people love getting dressed up to deal with the elements that winter throws at us, while some hate it.
Regardless of the camp you fall into, you need to adapt your style somewhat.
Today’s guide isn’t necessarily about what to buy (or what not to buy, in some cases). After all, you can check the catwalks for such advice, to some extent.
Instead, today is all about helpful tips for those cooler months. Some might involve a trip to Covent Garden, or your shopping area of choice, whereas others might just mean adapting your existing wardrobe. Either way, the following advice should hopefully allow you to prepare for winter in the most fashionable and easy manner possible.

Hemlines: it’s the little things that matter
While winter coats often grab the headlines during this period of the year, keeping on top of the small things can also help no-end.
For example, let’s take a look at hemlines. This can particularly be a problem with jeans, where hemlines can become a soggy mess in a matter of no-time. It’s not going to happen to the newest garment in your wardrobe, but for anything that’s been there for a bit of time there’s nothing worse than dragging a hemline through a puddle – when it’s freezing cold.
Get them tailored and eradicate the problem for good.

Bags: your key to practicality
Next, let’s talk bags. This isn’t necessarily about going for your favorite brand, but more about thinking practically.
If you hadn’t heard the news, layering is a big deal for winter fashion. This is where your bag can come to your aid. If you’re in-between clothes, make sure you have a bag large enough to hold a couple of extra layers. It doesn’t have to be huge, but if it can cope with a base layer or two you’ll be much more comfortable during these winter months.

Be sensible: but don’t lose your style
First and foremost, you don’t have to lose your sense of style during winter. However, you do have to let a few items go.
For example, lightweight skirts just aren’t fit for purpose during these colder periods. By the same token, backless shoes probably aren’t going to work either.
Make these decisions, one by one, and then assess your wardrobe to see what remaining items can fit together to tick all of the style boxes.

Every day is different
Finally, there are no hard and fast rules for winter. As anyone in the UK will testify, each day is different. One day might be sub-zero, while the next might be a more ‘respectable’ temperature.
This is something that you need to take into account with your winter wardrobe. While layering will help you to some extent, also make sure to keep an eye on the weather forecast before you leave the house. You’ll soon get a sense of the days in which you’ll need certain, bulkier items, and those where something lighter can be on the agenda.
