Research has found that the more involved parents are in their child’s education, they better they will perform. With that said, parents are often looking for ways to support their child’s academic journey and help them succeed. Communication with the teachers and seeking out learning opportunities at home a certainly important, but another fantastic way to show your child that you are dedicated to their education is to set up a study space in your home where they can complete their homework and exam revision. Here are some tips from a sixth form in Somerset on setting up the ideal study space for your child.

No Distractions
First and foremost, the study space should be free from distractions. If you set up a desk in the same room as the TV/games consoles, your child will not be able to focus on their homework. The chances are, they will rush through their work so that they can get back to their leisure activities. The rest of the family should respect your child’s study time and try not to interrupt them so that they can really get their head down and concentrate. However, your child should know that if they do start to struggle, they are able to come and ask for help at any time.

Adequate Lighting
Lighting is important in a study environment. Both adults and children work better when the lighting is natural, as we are hardwired to work during the day and rest at night. With that said, try and set up your child’s desk near a window. If natural lighting isn’t an option, make sure there is substantial artificial lighting so that they can see what they’re doing. Without decent lighting, your child may suffer with eye strain and headaches, which will not help them with their ability to concentrate.

Comfortable Furniture
You will also need to ensure that your child is comfortable when studying. Invest in ergonomic furniture where possible, that can be adjusted to your child’s height as they grown. They are going to be using their study space regularly, for extended periods of time, so it’s absolutely crucial that they are comfortable. If not, they could end up with various aches and pains and it will put them off sitting at their desk.

Storage
Another thing to consider is storage. There will need to be some shelving or drawers where your child can keep their books, stationery, and other study equipment. Without adequate storage, your child will be more likely to misplace items, and then they will waste valuable study time looking for them. Clutter will also make it difficult for them to focus, so make sure there’s some sort of system in place to keep everything neat and organised.
